Traditionally the barriers an independent company faced in conducting business research were high. The cost alone made it a service that was available only to the largest companies. But there were more daunting hurdles as well;

- Drafting a well-focused survey is a delicate task and requires experience in recognising the information required, recognising the limits of what people will answer, and phrasing questions such that they meet both those demands.

- Getting the results in a time-frame that made them useful was almost impossible. Often you had to wait months for the results of a snapshot of opinion. By that time you had already made your decisions and the information was useless.

- Analysing the data was difficult. Most services hand you a book full of tables and figures and leave you to figure out the relevance on your own.

These problems means that a lot of businesses paid dearly for an out-of-date book of figures which they couldn't understand and which never addressed their real needs in the first place.
